Honest guides to aesthetic and clinical treatments: what they do, who they suit, the real risks in South Asian skin, recovery time, and how to choose a qualified practitioner.

Chemical peels

Acids that remove the top layers of skin to improve tone, texture and acne marks.

In brown skin: superficial peels are usually preferred; deeper peels carry a higher risk of dark marks, so skin is often prepared beforehand and sun protection is essential.

Downtime: none to a week

Lasers & light

Devices that target pigment, hair, vessels or texture using light energy.

In brown skin: the wrong device or setting can cause burns or dark and light patches. Ask whether the device and settings are suited to darker skin types.

Downtime: varies by device

Microneedling

Fine needles create controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen, often used for acne scars.

In brown skin: generally a lower-risk option for darker skin when done hygienically, but it is not done over active acne or infection.

Downtime: 1–3 days of redness

Anti-wrinkle injections

A prescription medicine injected to relax specific muscles and soften expression lines.

In brown skin: skin colour matters less here than training: it should be given by a medical practitioner who knows facial anatomy.

Downtime: minimal

Dermal fillers

Usually hyaluronic acid gel, used to restore volume or contour.

In brown skin: rare but serious risks include blocked blood vessels. Choose a doctor trained in anatomy and complication management.

Downtime: swelling for days

Skin boosters & PRP

Injectable hydration or your own platelet-rich plasma, aimed at skin quality or hair.

In brown skin: evidence varies by indication; ask what results are realistic for your concern.

Downtime: 1–2 days

Before any treatment, ask

  • Who will perform it, and what are their medical qualifications?
  • Is this device or product suitable for my skin type, and how often have you used it on skin like mine?
  • What are the risks, and what happens if something goes wrong?
  • What will it cost in total, including follow-up sessions?
  • What should I do, and avoid, before and after?
